On February 1, 2019, Rhino Records released a brand-new digital compilation, Starship Enterprise: The Best Of Jefferson Starship & Starship.  The collection brings together 20 tracks from across the bands’ recorded legacy and is available now on digital download and streaming services.  Noteably, lead guitarist Craig Chaquico is the only member of both Jefferson Starship and Starship to have performed on ALL 20 tracks and wrote/co-wrote several of the hit songs on this compilation.*

Rhino also re-released, on April 13, 2019, Jefferson Starship’s 1978 gold-selling greatest hits album, GOLD. This limited edition gold vinyl pressing is limited to 5500 units worldwide and comes with a rare bonus gold 7” single featuring “Light The Sky On Fire” backed with “Hyperdrive”, honoring the original release.  Noteably, Craig Chaquico wrote both the music and lyrics to “Light the Sky on Fire” which Jefferson Starship also performed on the now cult-television film, 1978’s “Star Wars Holiday Special.”

JEFFERSON STARSHIP AND STARSHIP NOTABLE FACTS:

CRAIG IS THE ONLY ORIGINAL FOUNDING MEMBER, LEAD GUITARIST AND SONGWRITER ON EVERY JEFFERSON STARSHIP AND STARSHIP HIT ALBUM AND HIT SONG. Every hit song or gold and platinum album Grace Slick was ever on, or ever recorded after Jefferson Airplane broke up and Paul’s one solo album, Blows Against the Empire, Craig was the only lead guitarist performing on it with her.
Every hit song or gold and platinum album Mickey Thomas was ever the lead singer on,  besides one Elvin Bishop hit, Craig was the only lead guitarist and also wrote or co-wrote Mickey’s first two big Jefferson Starship hits several years after Mickey left the Elvin Bishop band and auditioned for Jefferson Starship. Jane and Find Your Way Back have that same “rockin’ guitar- band Craig-song sound” like Layin’ It On The Line, Rock Music, Fast Buck Freddie, Light The Sky On Fire, St. Charles, etc., etc., etc., Craig is the only lead guitarist and band member on all of the other Jefferson Starship and Starship big classic rock original hits and anthems of the ’70s and ’80s till the present without exception.

Most of the current band members of Jefferson Starship (and Starship: featuring Mickey Thomas) at the present have never appeared on any of the actual original hit recordings by the Jefferson Starship and/or Starship, nor have they been on any of the original gold and platinum albums. There have not been any big hits and gold or platinum Jefferson Starship or Starship albums without Craig – either before or after. Nobody else can say that yet.  That includes anything by the Starship: featuring Mickey Thomas or Mickey Thomas’ Starship bands which are not at all the same band as the original Starship who recorded all the original Starship hits and anthems of the ’80s. Mickey Thomas is only one of the original singers from the Starship performing with a changing line-up of all newer back-up musicians now.

In 1990 Craig embarked on his own Acoustic Highway and #1, million selling, Grammy nominated, Smooth Jazz, Contemporary Instrumental, New Age, acoustic guitar, blues guitar, electric guitar musical treks. Greetings and salutations to all, with great respect and much gratitude. I am honored. From the accordion to Accoladia; to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new chordalizations;  to boldly go where no band has…”

” ‘It’s No Secret’  that Craig is the only one original founding member, lead guitarist and hit songwriter who actually played on all the original Jefferson Starship and Starship hits, songs, tours, MTV videos and albums from 1974 until Starship officially disbanded after Craig left in 1990.” – Ron Santos KSAN / on-air radio personality / TV & radio voice-over talent / professional broadcaster

mickey thomasMickey Thomas was left without a band and songwriter when Craig (the final musician, hit songwriter  and original founding member to leave) left. So a few years later Mickey formed a brand new bandMickey Thomas Starship1 called ‘Starship: Featuring Mickey Thomas’ with people who were never actually in Starship or Jefferson Starship, but who still play and re-record exciting versions of the original ’70s-’80s hits as Starship: Featuring Mickey Thomas rather than the Mickey Thomas Band. These re-recordings show up on some Starship Greatest Hits compilations listed as STARSHIP.

Paul Kantner and David Freiberg have had similar stellar versions since the hit-making years as well of ever-evolving lineups playing the original hits as ‘Jefferson Starship’ in a magnificently successful Lagrangian orbit. Both touring bands still
play and re-record some of the original bands’ hit songs from the ’70s and ’80s amazingly reinacted to sound as much like the original recordings, hits, singers and musicians as possible.

Jefferson Starship ORIGINAL CDSCraig and John Barbata are the only ones who haven’t performed with any of the ever-evolving bands currently using the legendary names, but Craig must be flattered beyond belief that they are all still playing and re-recording all of his hit songs, arrangements and signature guitar parts. ‘Hey, that’s OK with me,  I am too,’ says Craig who is flattered and has continued to record his own #1 records and headline his own Live shows using his own name since 1990 when the original Starship band officially ended.

“Even though they are all still alive and kicking, except for Papa John (RIP), the original multi-platinum Jefferson Starship line-up  (Pete Sears, David Freiberg, Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Grace Slick, Craig Chaquico and John Barbata) hasn’t performed together since 1978. – Anonymous San Francisco Bay Area Musical Sophisticate
